A mixture of easier walks and mountain hikes, taking in some of the sights and pageant of Holy Week in southern Spain. As always, we'll also visit some of the beautiful mountain villages of the area.
Spring in the Alpujarras brings the fragrant flowers and blossom, against the backdrop of the peaks of the stunning Sierra Nevada, still lined with snow. Migratory birds are just arriving from Africa: swallows and colourful bee-eaters skim the tree tops and the calls of the golden oriole and cuckoo can be heard. The willows lining streams and tumbling mountain rivers provide shelter for the nightingales.
With walks to delight, tasty picnics and convivial evening meals, what better way to celebrate the arrival of the new season?
The programme for the week starts on Sunday with a shorter walk including picnic. During the remainder of the week there are 2 full day walks (Monday and Friday) and 2 half day walks (Tuesday and Wednesday).
Typically there will be 3 to 4 hours of walking during a normal FULL day, with time for lunch, refreshments and other stops on top of this. We usually leave the centre at 10am and return between 4.30 and 6.30pm. The full day walk can be up to 13km/8 miles with up to 600m uphill/700m downhill elevation. The half day walk is 4 to 5.5km/2½ to 3½ miles.
