A great introduction to walking in the Alpujarras mountains and a perennial favourite with participants, this is a week of varied hikes at a perfect time of year for walking in the South of Spain. With autumn arriving, there will be fruits to gather, trees ablaze with gorgeous colours, glowing sunsets to enjoy and wonderful company to share. Average temperatures are still in the twenties.
There will also be an opportunity to visit the Arab Baths in Granada and a lunchtime meal out at the beach after a stroll along the coastal nature reserve at Cantarrijan.
Graded EASY to MODERATE, our walks take us into the National Park area as well as the pretty whitewashed hill villages. Trails are seldom flat, so expect a reasonable amount of ascent and descent. No experience is necessary, but good health and reasonable fitness are important.
The programme for the week starts on Sunday with a shorter walk including picnic. During the remainder of the week there are 2 full day walks (Monday and Friday) and 2 half day walks (Tuesday and Wednesday).
Typically there will be 3 to 4 hours of walking during a normal FULL day, with time for lunch, refreshments and other stops on top of this. We usually leave the centre at 10am and return between 4.30 and 6.30pm. The full day walk can be up to 13km/8 miles with up to 600m uphill/700m downhill elevation. The half day walk is 4 to 5.5km/2½ to 3½ miles.
There's always the option to step out of a day excursion and spend time in the villages or at the centre lazing in the sun or taking a massage.
