The ideal way to learn a language is to use it naturally in daily life by communicating directly with people. Many language courses concentrate heavily on verbs and grammar to the extent that students rarely get much enjoyment out of learning the language. The LIVING SPANISH course run by Eduardo uses the “ natural approach” which helps students gain confidence in speaking Spanish through role plays and real conversation. Eduardo encourages students to use the language wherever possible and doesn’t correct every mistake, which means that you don’t feel self-conscious about speaking. Grammar is woven into the course and students are able to practise what they have learnt almost instantaneously with local people.

There are 20 hours of teaching and assignments during the week’s stay at Cortijo Romero. The classes in the mornings are related to the conversations you might have with people, covering topics of general interest like shopping, eating out, finding out about people’s daily routines, work, leisure etc. These topics are role-played in class before you venture out into the local community to gather real-life information. Eduardo is Argentinean and speaks more slowly than many native Spaniards and this makes it easier for people who are just beginning to get to grips with the language.

You will then be given specific assignments in the local town of Orgiva such as locating the baker’s by asking directions and talking to the owner. Students record these conversations and take them back to class. At first you may be timid in speaking out but the local people are very friendly to anyone who wants to speak their language and very quickly you will have the confidence to hold a conversation. Because you are hearing Spanish all week you begin to live and breathe it and this develops confidence.

Later on you return to relate your experiences, telling your stories and giving your impressions in the flavour of the local language. Eduardo may transcribe some of your taped conversations for listening practise and to clarify any doubts in class.

This direct and effective way of learning Spanish will give you a real taste of the local culture, make you feel more at ease within it and inspire you to keep talking Spanish.
